Dr. Larry Berkwitt

Internal Medicine

Dr. Berkwitt graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1975, and he spent the next three years in an internship and residency in small animal internal medicine at the same institution. Following his residency, he moved to New Jersey to become the internist at a large referral practice in the northern part of the state. In 1980, he became board-certified in the specialty of internal medicine and moved to Connecticut, thus becoming the only veterinary internal medicine specialist between New York and Boston. Over the following twenty six years, he owned and operated multiple twenty four hour veterinary referral and emergency centers in different areas of the state. He enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, including abdominal ultrasound, and endoscopy. He and his associates  developed an internship program that is nationally recognized as a quality teaching site for new graduates, a large proportion of which have gone on to specialties in many different areas of veterinary medicine. Currently, along with his position as staff internist at NEVCCC, he serves as Chief Medical Officer for Pet Vet Care Centers, which owns over 40 veterinary hospitals throughout the US. He has served on the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association Board of Directors for ten years and, in 2015, became the president of that organization.

He has been happily married to his wife Jean for 44 years. They have two children and two grandchildren, who all live within the state. He enjoys being with friends, fine dining, traveling with his wife, skiing, and both Ohio State and Giant Football. Go Bucks, Go Big Blue.
